The Seven Deadly Sins
Nonclassical Associate Composer Lola de la Mata premieres a brand new work with the Southbank Sinfonia.
Pride, Greed, Lust, Envy, Gluttony, Anger, and Sloth. Weill’s dark, satirical ‘sung ballet’ The Seven Deadly Sins is a cautionary tale of a women’s lost humanity in the pursuit of the American Dream. The glitz and glamour of 1930s cabaret shows its sleazier side in the witty text by Brecht paired up with Weill’s well-crafted parodies of the popular music of the era.
Strauss’ rich, luscious Overture and Dance Scene from his opera Ariadne auf Naxos contrasts with the fresh, vitality of the ever-inventive Mozart with his Flute Concerto No.2 which sparkles with elegant solo passages for Southbank Sinfonia player, Catherine Hare.
A driving pulse relentlessly urges the music forward at maximum in Widmann’s 180 beats per minute which the composer describes as a “sheer enjoyment of rhythm.”
