Workshop 2

Wed 9 Sep, 6–7:30pm BST

Composer-performer Neil Luck will lead participants in a practical investigation of experimental music-making limited by domestic scales and means.

Looking in particular at the role of different technologies in creation and dissemination of sound-based performance, the two workshops – hosted via Zoom – will touch on object theatre, multimedia work, and the ‘homemade’ as vital and radical forms.

In the first workshop Neil will present a colourful overview of experimental domestic-scale performance practices. As well as talking about his own methods, the workshop will highlight peculiar and under-examined cases from an expanded range of disciplines. The group will then participate in a series of interactive experiments that explore “telematic” collaboration, performance to camera, and objects-as-instruments. The group will then collaboratively write a set of provocations and questions to explore and experiment with in the creation of their own new short works.

Participants will come back together in a second session to present and discuss works they have developed in the interim (either live or recorded), with individual feedback from Neil. Through experimenting and sharing collectively in this way, the two workshops hope to expand and explore ideas and techniques in this contemporary and urgent field of practice.

Suitable for anyone with an interest in, and experience of musical composition and performance. If you have any questions regarding suitability for this workshop or if the price is a barrier to your ability to attend, please get in touch with sophie@nonclassical.co.uk

About the artist

Neil Luck is a composer, performer, and director based in London. His music engages the physical and fallible nature of live performance in multimedia contexts, and attempts to frame the act of music making itself as something strange, useful, or spectacular in and of itself.

Neil runs the performance group ARCO – a company that focuses on experimental approaches to music-theatre.

Neil and ARCO have worked with a wide range of major arts institutions such as Tate Modern, Palais de Tokyo (Paris), Modern Art Oxford, Tokyo Wondersite (Japan), MATA Festival (New York), London Contemporary Music Festival, Aarhus European Capital of Culture 2017 Festival (Denmark), The BBC Proms, and BBC Radio 3; presenting touring music-theatre works, one off performances, concert music, radio broadcasts, videos, and site-specific works.
