With our event in The Garden at 120 just under a week away, find out more about the artists involved and what they’ll be performing as the sun sets on the city skyline.
Chihiro Ono
Born in Japan, Chihiro is a classically trained violinist, violist and performing artist. Her repertoire ranges from Baroque music on period instruments all the way to contemporary, experimental, improvisation and noise. She is particularly inspired by geopolitics, architecture, choreography, cinematography, folklore and the everyday sounds of life. Chihiro often uses music as a tool to explore the human condition, linking people to places. She’ll be performing Brian Ferneyhough’s Intermedio alla ciaccona, improvisations on the surrounding buildings and her own work Kaleido Tunnel.
Sam Cave
Sam Cave is an English guitarist and composer who is quickly establishing himself as one of the guitar’s leading exponents of new music. He has performed at venues including The National Gallery, St John’s Smith Square, Handel and Hendrix in London, LSO St Luke’s, Southbank Centre and the ICA. He has worked with the likes of Gabriel Prokofiev, George Holloway, Darren Bloom and Lisa Illean and has recorded for the Another Timbre and Metier labels. As a composer, Sam’s work has been performed across the UK and Europe. He is currently a LSO Soundhub Associate. He’ll be performing a range of contemporary guitar pieces, including Christopher Fox’s Chile.
Mandhira de Saram
Mandhira is a founding member and leader of the Ligeti Quartet, a string quartet who specialise in contemporary music in all its many guises. She is also a busy soloist, improviser, chamber musician and collaborator, having worked with musicians such as Jason Singh, Wadada Leo Smith, Trish Clowes, Ethan Iverson and Shabaka Hutchings. She has performed at venues such as the Wigmore Hall, Barbican Centre, Southbank Centre, St John’s Smith Square and Carnegie Hall in New York, and has featured on BBC Radio 3 programmes including In Tune, Music Matters, Jazz on 3, Hear and Now, and Late Junction. She’ll also be performing an improvised set in response to her surroundings in The Garden at 120.
Ben Vince
Saxophonist and composer Ben Vince combines extended techniques, electronic processing and improvisation to radially explore the possibilities of the saxophone. Spanning free improv, DIY and dancefloor scenes, he has built a reputation as a one-of-a-kind live force who can veer from propulsive, full blast skronk outs to acoustically responsive ambience. He’ll be performing an improvised set as the sun goes down.
Gabriel Prokofiev (DJ set)
Gabriel Prokofiev is a London-based composer, producer, DJ and founder of nonclassical. Composing music that both embraces and challenges western classical traditions, Gabriel has emerged at the forefront of a new approach to classical music in the UK at the beginning of the 21st century.
His compositions have been performed at a diverse range of venues, from the Royal Albert Hall and Tchaikovsky Hall, through to East London night-clubs & warehouses. With performers including Daniel Hope, Vladimir Jurowski, Sascha Goetzel, Seattle Symphony, Luxembourg Philharmonie, Russian State Symphony, Copenhagen Philharmonic, and Princeton Symphony. In between sets, Gabriel will be DJing throughout the night.
