This September, we’re back for our second instalment of our Sky Gardens series as part of City of London’s Fantastic Feats. This free event gives you the chance to check out some of the best experimental electronic music on the London scene, whilst drinking in the spectacular London skyline (and a couple of beers if you’re so inclined). Martina Lussi
Working within installation, sound art and performance, Swiss artist Martina Lussi has performed across Europe including Atonal (Berlin), Cafe Oto, Rhizom Festival (Zurich), SOY Festival (Nantes) and OK LÀ Festival (Montreal). Her practice is often at the intersection of art, performance and music, and regularly performs live in various contexts to continually review her material from different angles.
Kirk Barley
Drawing influence from minimalism, techno and hip-hop, composer and sound artist Kirk Barley creates a highly textual soundworld using studio and field recordings, digital synthesis, musique concrète and audio processing techniques. He work often features unusual time signatures, non-standard tunings and algorithmic composition. His work has been performed across the UK, Europe and Canada.
Fari Bradley
Iranian sound artist, composer and broadcaster Fari Bradley describes her practice as ‘working with listening, language and the environment to question our sense of self and our place within the society and nature.’ She has performed at the V&A Museum, Cafe Oto, South London Gallery, London festival of Architecture with the Resonance Radio Orchestra, London Mela and New York University, Abu Dhabi, and has been released on The Vinyl Factory Records. Her work spans performance, broadcast, installation and sculpture around listening and modes of communication, which often explores architecture, ideas of public space and history.
Tom Richards
Artist, musician, DJ, researcher and instrument designer Tom Richards often walks the line between sonic art, sculpture and music. Performing on his own idiosyncratic modular electronic music system – which he built from scratch – he creates slowly evolving and heavily textured polyrhythmic improvisations. His individual approach and reductive palette has lead to a taut, rhythmically focused sonic experience. He has performed and exhibited widely in the UK, as well as internationally in the US, Germany, Peru, Japan and Sweden. His album – Pink Nothing – was released with nonclassical in July 2018.
Nick Luscombe (DJ)
Described as a ‘restless musical soul,’ DJ and broadcaster Nick Luscombe is constantly on the look-out for sonic goodness from all corners of the earth and eager to share new discoveries through his radio shows and numerous DJ sets. He’s a presenter for BBC Radio 3s Late Junction and has also presented music radio programmes across various commercial stations, the BBC World Service and for BBC 6 Music (6 Mix). He’s also worked as both Music Editor at iTunes and Director of Music at the ICA and is the founder of Musicity, an international sound project that fuses music, architecture, memory and experience.
