This period of pandemic and lockdown has brought huge changes in our lives, and also our soundscape. Following on from her hugely popular workshops earlier this year, Fieldwave sound artist Kate Carr led us in two remote workshops exploring these changes through deep listening, field recording and composition.

Over the course of two online Zoom sessions, our participants explored different aspects of field recording and deep listening through a guided discussion and listening session. In the second session, our participants came back together to share recordings and compositions inspired by our changing soundscapes. Here you can find a selection of these sound works from participants in the UK, Estonia, Sweden, Japan and Australia.

"For me the new soundscapes workshops were a real privilege to be a part of. There was a huge amount of knowledge and skill among the group participants, and it was wonderful to see people connecting to each other through sound and listening even in these difficult circumstances. The works produced are hugely diverse in mood, content and techniques but I love how many of them show a gentle and even sometimes slightly dark humour, from appreciating our dogs’ snoring, to visiting online psychics and playing plumbing pipes. It was very reassuring to see people finding ways to have fun with sound in lockdown in such a variety of ways.
