We celebrated the release of The Harmonic Canon Remixes with an immersive event at Stephen Lawrence Gallery. Dominic Murcott presented a special new version of his award-winning work for percussion duo and half-tonne sculptural bell, interweaving the original composition with quadraphonic electronics, collective improvisation and Azerbaijani Tar. NikNak ended the night with a quadraphonic turntablism set.

Performed by Gosia Kepa and Rhys Davies, this reimagined rendition of The Harmonic Canon was mesmerising, and marks the last outing of the work in the UK before the bell is moved to America for a US tour. Audience members who had participated in a pre-concert workshop joined Rhys and Gosia for the second part of the performance, playing on a series of delicate percussion instruments dotted around the space. Morad Kashef emerged with an Azerbaijani Tar (a plucked instrument similar to a lute), conjuring beautiful melodies and resonances from the instrument. The performance concluded with the performers standing around the bell, silencing the instrument together solemnly at the close of the piece.

After a short interval, NikNak took to the stage with an ambient DJ set. Extended turntablism techniques collided with ambient tracks with effortless flair, showcasing NikNak’s innovative creative practice.

We’d like to say a huge thank you to all the artists involved, the amazing team of volunteers and our wonderful partners, The University of Greenwich Stephen Lawrence Gallery, Trinity Laban and The Samuel Gardner Memorial Trust.
