Dominic Murcott
Dominic Murcott is a composer, percussionist, curator and educator based in London. Much of his work combines acoustic instruments with computers, film and other media. Dominic has a continuing interest in work that is personalised for specific performers, collaborating regularly with esteemed performers and artists. After several years of research, he is reknowned as an expert in the works of Conlon Nancarrow, having curated the critically acclaimed festival of the composer’s works at the Southbank Centre in 2012.
Released on nonclassical in 2019, The Harmonic Canon is Dominic’s work for percussion duo and a custom built half tonne bronze bell designed by sculptor Marcus Vergette. The original piece consists of two parts which are 21 minutes in length – designed to exactly fit two sides of a vinyl LP. Dominic won a BASCA British Composer Award for the piece in December 2018.
Dominic has created a new extended version of The Harmonic Canon especially for this performance, incorporating meditative improvisation, quadraphonic electronics and Azerbaijani tar.
Gosia Kepa
Gosia Kepa is an award-winning Polish percussionist based in London. Her personal and emotional approach to marimba repertoire led to her graduating with a Silver Medal Award from Trinity Laban. Gosia has gone on to perform with various orchestras across Europe, both as a soloist and ensemble member.
Gosia will be conjuring a myriad of sounds and chimes from the bell alongside Rhys in Dominic’s re-imagined version of The Harmonic Canon.
Rhys Davies
Rhys is a performer based around London and the UK. As co-founder of The Public Bungalow and London-based recording studio Sound of the Sandbox, Rhys’ creativity and performances can be found across digital and live platforms. As a drummer and percussionist, Rhys draws influence from an enticing plethora of genres and is as at home on acoustic instruments as he is manipulating sounds with hybrid electronics.
Rhys joins Gosia at the bell for this performance, accompanied by experimental electronics.
NikNak
NikNak is a multidisciplinary artist known for her original dynamic music and experimental turntablism. Previously mentored by Shiva Feshareki, Anna Meredith and Supriya Nagaranjan, NikNak became the first Black Turntablist in history to win the illustrious Oram Award in 2020, has been featured in well renowned publications such as Mixmag, Resident Advisor, Yorkshire Evening Post, Electronic Sound Mag, and DJ Mag, and received support from Arts Council, Brighter Sound, Launchpad, Sound UK, Sound and Music, and PRS Foundation. Her debut album Bashi received acclaim from Resident Advisor, listed as one of their Best Albums of January 2021 as well as airplay on BBC Radio 3, Worldwide FM and Threads Radio.
NikNak will be closing our event with an experimental turntablism set, combining ambient electronics with quadraphonic sound.
